The crusades were in large part a response to centuries of Muslim aggression against Christian lands and peoples, as opposed to a proactive initiative to eliminate heretics. Slavery and Native American atrocities are a national disgrace, but not necessarily a Christian one, even if the perpetrators were inevitably supposed God-fearing Americans. Christianity still has its murderous zealots, however; Let’s not forget Northern Ireland, even if they do only kill other Christians. The Muslim extremists are at least more equal opportunity in their misanthropy. Shi’ites and Sunnis kill not only each other, but Jews, Christians and Sikhs with equally bloodthirsty fervor. They aren’t complacent by any stretch of the imagination; They hate us, and the malice is born not only by the extremists but by the general populace of the Muslim nations. Remember the news clips of them dancing in the streets on 9/11? Any cleric that dared to speak out against persecuting Christians would be besieged by a mob and stoned to death in short order.

Northern Ireland has less to do with sparring religions than sparring countries. there's a long history of british wrongs that won't go away, similarly to the palestine and israel / arab v jewish issue.

The history of Islam set a rather unfortunate precedent for Muslims to refer to; Muhammed, the prophet that is their supposed role mode, was a murderous, larcenous authoritarian that ordered dozens of people killed who he felt were a threat or who opposed him. The acquisition of the fortunes and lands that were claimed in the name of Islam was delegated to armed bands of terrorists that pillaged cities and caravans in exchange for protection and a share of the loot. The followers that he converted were often forced to do so at swordpoint, and the rape and sale of women captives as slaves was espoused as acceptable and just. And if that isn’t enough to convince you of the high moral ground that this prophet stood on, his twelve wives included his adopted son’s wife and a six-year old who he consummated his marriage with when she was nine. Most of these imperatives and actions are contained in the holy scriptures of Islam, and are justified as directives from Allah that Mohammed received in visions. So when Muslims default to WWMD (What Would Muhammed Do), slicing up little schoolgirls isn’t far off the mark, and it’s amazing that the good Muslims of the world have managed to divine any kind of positive message from his teachings.
