This is a picture of the results of decades of communist rule... a society that cannot even afford nor has the infrastructure still in place to turn on the lights. When human beings are constricted, their creativity not only -not- rewarded but punished (you cannot allow free thinkers in such a society), their incentives to do good things for themselves and not for the 'great society'--as human evolution has created us as selfish creatures as the mechanism by which we ensure our families and therefore our DNA survive--are quashed, when such a society exists, well, here's what you get... I agree but just to create some discussion, here are the results of other communist country:

Since 1978, China's economy has grown at a compound rate of more than 9% per year.

Ah, armando, you raise a very valid point. The interesting thing about China is they have a sort of hybrid blend of communism and capitalism. China encourages entreprenership and has a quasi-free market. But during the height of communist oppression, they were starving, and did, in fact, have major issues with infrastructure basics (and still need to recover from such).

However, your point is still valid. And one might bring in the argument of Cuba, where, in spite of poverty and widespread oppression and no free market, people there are generally happy, and have a much longer lifespan on average than the US.

Another argument might be that "communist" is not a very apt description for the government in N. Korea, and it's simply an oppressive dictatorship giving communism a bad name (forgetting that Pol Pot and Stalin did a pretty good job of that themselves).

But let's talk about to Soviet Russia and its teacher's pet, East Germany...those countries imploded due to the fact that they suffered decade after decade of negative economic growth, as communism truly does ruin progress; it's not rewarded and is frequently punished.

I'm no economist, but for really good reads on this very topic, I recommend www.cato.org.
