Read all about it A mother of two small children in Florida had bats flying around her apartment, which is bizarre enough in itself. Bats? Have YOU ever had multiple BATS flying around your house? This mother of the year refuses rabies vaccinations for the children. Several years ago, a guy out in the middle of Nowheresville corralled a single bat in a bag to get it out of his shed, and later died an agonzing rabid death. He had been very slightly scratched by the bat and didn't realize it. So say again why you'd refuse vaccinations when you had several bats flying around your Florida apartment...we SoCali folks are confused. (Confusion clears as readers note this all takes place in Florida...)

I'm still trying to get the visual of living in a apartment with bats flying around.

rabies shots hurt like a sonofabitch (and leave a LOVELY bruise to boot)...

and at $150/pop (three shots pre-exposure... FIVE shots post-, if you don't have first three preventative), damn 'spensive...

to top it off, i had to pratically *beg* the woman at OCHA to give me the honor of shelling out $450 for just one of my many travel vaccinations... oy!

but worth it... duh!

You know I've heard it hurts like hell too; but my doggie dogg doesn't seem to mind them much. I wonder why? Ah the difference is probably pre- vs. post- exposure.

Well, there's no diff between pre- and post- shots (five shots for humans, at least... don't know what's in the cute poochie shot, but i'm glad it doesn't seem to bother him/her)...

if you're getting a preventative vaccination, it's three before... then, if you're bitten/scratched/whatever, you need the other two...

the idea is that, if something happens and you're far from medical facilities, you've already got three of the five... so you have time.

for example, when i'm kickin' it in a buddhist temple in the far reaches of tibet in a few weeks, and if a rabid dog runs up and bites me in the ass (karma? :), i won't die an excruciating death (at least not at that point).

of course, i wouldn't have to worry about this so much if the chinese gov't made efforts to control the canine population/vaccinate the animals... this is their solutions (doggie-lovers be warned)... http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/08/01/china.dogs.ap/index.html
